December 30, 2019  By Greta Chiu

Applications for the Alberta Greenhouse Rebate Program will be accepted until January 17, 2020.

The program provides an 80 per cent rebate on the carbon levy paid on eligible purchases of natural gas and propane for crop production-related heating in the greenhouse, incurred between January 1, 2019 and May 30, 2019.

According to Alberta Agriculture, eligible applicants must be registered commercial greenhouse operators with sales of over $20,000 in the 12-month period prior to the application date.

Start-ups with fewer than 12 months under their belt should have annual forecasts of over $20,000 in the 12 months after their application date.

An eligible operation is defined as “a heated commercial greenhouse space under an enclosed area used to grow vegetables, fruits, bedding plants, cut flowers, ornamental plants, tree seedlings, medicinal plants or other plants in Alberta.” Cannabis plants are not eligible.

Heating for retail space, private residence or offices are not eligible. Fuel used for operating equipment is also not eligible.
