Bruderheim grower goes hydroponic

February 5, 2019  By Arthur Green Sherwood Park News

Owner of Thiel’s Greenhouses, Nadine Stielow is taking her greenhouse to the next level of plant cultivation with the recent installation of a hydroponic system to grow lettuce.

The Dry Hydroponics system is suitable for short-cycle crops, like lettuce, herbs and flowers. Thiel’s Greenhouses will be able to produce 1,500 to almost 2,000 heads of fresh lettuce a week with the new equipment. Because of this mass amount, the company plans to expand its market to local consumers, grocers, and high-end restaurants in Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton and east-central Alberta.

The system uses cultivation ponds built of cement. Nutrient-rich water is added to the ponds and the crops grow in crop holders placed on floats. The design allows crops to acquire sufficient amounts of water, light, nutrients, CO2 and oxygen. All told, the equipment creates an ideal microclimate, which allows crops to grow in a natural way. | READ MORE
