Canadian cannabis producer Flowr and Hawthorne Gardening Company (subsidiary of the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company) have announced an R&D partnership, building the first facility in North America dedicated to cannabis research and development.

The 50,000 square-foot facility will be built in Kelowna, BC, complete with labs, indoor and greenhouse growing areas, plus genetic breeding space – all in one building. Construction is slated to begin this year, and the facility is expected to be ready next year.

Scientists from both organizations will be collaborating on nutrient fomulations, lighting, environmental systems, irrigation, growing media, as well as integrated cultivation systems supporting Hawthorne brands (Botanicare, Gavita, General Hydroponics, Can-Filters). According to the release, cultivars will be developed for specific growing conditions and therapeutic uses.

“Our alliance with Hawthorne gives us a unique opportunity to combine their deep expertise in cultivation products and systems with our industry-leading expertise in cannabis grow facility construction and cannabis cultivation techniques” said Tony Giorgi, CEO of Flowr.  “We’re excited about the advancements this alliance will bring to us, to Hawthorne, and to the cannabis industry.”
