New varieties in the spotlight at Farwest Show

June 19, 2014  By Canadian Garden Centre & Nursery

June 19, 2014, Portland, OR — The 2014 Farwest Trade Show will display more than 50 of the hottest new plant introductions in this year's new varieties showcase.

Nineteen companies from across North America have submitted their best annuals, perennials, shrubs, conifers and shade and flowering trees to the showcase. This year's entries demonstrate the prized characteristics that retailers and growers are seeking: new features; improved performance in production environments and landscapes; compact sizes; enhanced disease resistance; performance in urban settings; and drought tolerance.

Plants will be creatively displayed in retail fashion and well-tagged with full descriptions, compliments of HIP Labels, the sponsor of this year's new varieties showcase. Take-it-with-you tags will make it easy for visitors to find the growers and breeders on the show floor and place orders for the fall or spring 2015.

"This year's showcase is a real showstopper for retail," said Allan Niemi, director of events and education at the Oregon Association of Nurseries, which produces the Farwest show. "The range and quality of the entries demonstrates the lengths that breeders and growers are going to find superstars that connect with consumer trends and desires."

As in past years, a team of retailers, landscape designers and growers will evaluate the varieties and award the top picks. In addition, visitors to the showcase will have the opportunity to choose their favourite new introduction. The winners of the People's Choice Awards will be announced after the show.

The Farwest Trade Show runs Aug. 21 to 23 in Portland, Ore. For more information, visit www.FarwestShow.com.
