Last commercial flights between Mexico and Vancouver confirmed

February 1, 2021  By Western Agriculture Labour Initiative (WALI)

The Western Agriculture Labour Initiative (WALI) has confirmed with Aeroméxico that the last commercial flight arriving into Vancouver from Mexico will be Sunday, Feb. 7.

While some AgStream workers will be on the Feb. 7 flight, the last commercial flight for SAWP workers is Friday, Feb. 5 as the Ministry of Labour in Mexico (STPS) is closed on weekends.

Mi Tierra is working with STPS to get as many SAWP workers on that flight as possible. This could impact travel from most other Central American countries as the majority of workers travel through Mexico City, notes WALI.

The last commercial flight departing Vancouver for Mexico City is Feb. 8. WALI notes that there may not be other options to return south until May.

Charter Flights to Begin

WALI and Mi Tierra are working to arrange charter flights starting later next week. In addition to contracting an air crew, this requires WALI to confirm with STPS that workers are prepared to travel and to work with the governments of British Columbia and Canada to ensure testing on arrival and quarantine capacities are in place.

Employers will be contacted as soon as details for charter flights are available.

This announcement follows the federal suspension of commercial flights from Mexico and Caribbean countries, which came into effect Jan. 31.
