A blooming great way to start their day

December 16, 2015  By Dave Harrison

Dec. 16, 2015, Toronto — A touch of brightness, colour and excitement was added to the commute of many Torontonians one day earlier this month.

PickOntario gave away 6,000 gerbera daisies, provided by Bayview Flowers, at Union Station in an effort to brighten peoples’ day, while showcasing the importance of Ontario flowers.

“We wanted to spread floral happiness and encourage people to make flowers a part of their daily lives,” said Dejan Kristan, marketing director at Flowers Canada (Ontario). “Everyone should experience the happiness felt when they receive flowers, as well as the happiness they create when they give flowers. From the smiles we saw, this was definitely the case.”

Rutgers University released a study showing that the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction, and affects social behaviours in a positive manner. The research concluded that:

• Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness.

• Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods – feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated, with a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.

• Flowers make intimate connection as their presence often leads to increased contact with family and friends.

“As part of the PickOntario campaign, this flower drop-off helped raise awareness, interest and demand for Ontario-grown flowers such as those from Bayview Flowers,” said Dejan.

“It is important to look for and buy Ontario flowers as it supports the local economy and guarantees fresher products that will bring happiness for a longer period of time.”

The colder months can quickly change from a winter wonderland, to dreary and grey. When all you see are bare trees and snow, flowers are a great way to put a little spring back in your life this holiday season.

“Our goal was to improve peoples’ moods and with the beautiful Gerbera Daisies provided by Bayview Flowers, we were able to do just that,” said Dejan
