Summer 2007 is all about creative gardening with ease, says landscape architect Janet Rosenberg. Speaking to a group of gardening and home décor media at Toronto Botanical Garden, on behalf of Loblaw Lawn and Garden Centres, the founder of Janet Rosenberg & Associates, identified six of the season’s key lawn and garden trends, including:
Containers
Rosenberg said containers are great for a front entrance or back deck, and a perfect solution for condo-dwellers who want to add some life to a balcony, terrace or roof-top garden.
Adding Water
Water adds to a garden’s sensory appeal. Fountains add an architectural element to the garden in addition to the soothing sound of flowing water.
Creating Colour & Texture
Explore colour and texture with tone-on-tone plant colours. Varying colour shades can add dimension and enhance visual appeal. Jewel tones like yellow, orange, red and deep purple add drama.
Going Green
“There’s no denying the importance of the Green Movement, and in the garden this means using plants that require fewer sprays or fertilizers,” she says. “Plants that require less water are also hot these days. And mulching makes all gardens greener, because it reduces water needs.”
Thinking Big
“Larger groupings of plants add impact. Instead of planting one of each, try three or more of one kind of plant. Make a statement with perennials planted in mass groupings.”
Working From the Inside Out
Extend your indoor décor to the patio with oversized, comfortable furniture co-ordinated with beautiful, colourful outdoor planters. Outdoor rooms are an extension of the home and provide great areas for entertaining.

The Dixie Wood Fern, a new variety, semi-evergreen fern with tall erect growth bearing handsome dark green fronds and a slender vase-like form.
Gigantico Annuals include the new Gigantico Bacopa ‘Gulliver White,’ the largest on the market with a bloom the size of a quarter, rather than the usual bacopa which is the size of a dime. For bold colour contrast, the new Non-Stop ‘Begonia Mocca’ from President’s Choice, has a rich chocolate-coloured foliage that makes blossoms pop.
The new Angelonia ‘Angelmist Basket Purple,’ with shorter spikes, is designed for baskets.
In the perennial realm, the ever-expanding lineup of new Echinacea colours includes PC ‘Harvest Moon’™ with flowers of earthy gold with a golden orange cone.
‘My Monet’™ Wiegela, a top pick shrub, has rich pink flowers with creamy, pink-infused variegated foliage.
Rosenberg noted that there is a great deal of information now available on Canadian growing conditions and Cantley commented that, “President’s Choice works with the best regional growers across Canada to ensure we offer the best plants to our customers.”
