Oct. 11, 2012, West Chicago, IL — Summit Plastic Company and Ball Horticultural Company are reducing their prices on pots made from renewable bio-materials.

The price reductions apply to TerraShell home compostable pots, select Rice Hull NetPots and trays made from plant-based materials (PLA).

“Working as bio-packaging partners, Summit and Ball have been able to increase volume and improve production efficiencies to make these price reductions possible this season,” said Summit president Norm Belliveau.

TerraShell pot prices have been reduced by 20 per cent; four sizes of Rice Hull NetPots have been reduced by 10 per cent; and PLA trays will be 20 per cent lower than last year’s prices.

“The new price this season will offer many growers the opportunity to choose bio-packaging options, which they may have forgone in the past,” said Bill Doeckel, general manager of Ball Innovations. “Growers already using bio-packaging will benefit from savings in a squeezed economy.”

TerraShell pots, in addition to being third-party certified home compostable, fit growers’ automated filling processes and can be custom printed.

“Growers can brand TerraShell in up to six-colour printing,” said Belliveau. “Besides the lower price, we’ve reduced the minimum print runs to 10,000 pots.”

Rice Hull NetPots can be planted by home gardeners, who report that NetPots eliminate transplant damage and ease their disposal, saving on planting and cleanup time. The price reduction affects four popular sizes of the seven total sizes offered.

Growers who wish to offer their customers a comprehensive sustainable package can use PLA trays as an option. The trays are available in a variety of configurations to fit all the bio-pots offered by Summit and Ball. PLA is durable in production, and is industrial compostable.
