Researchers at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) are exploring the possibility of transforming sea urchins into a potent biostimulant for greenhouse crops, particularly leafy greens. The research, coming from the NIBIO’s Department of Biomarine Resource Valorisation, looks to restore Norway’s overgrazed coastal kelp forests, which have suffered from an unchecked sea urchin population. Using an industrial-scale harvesting tool for sea urchins, the team is facilitates the pest’s removal but also converts this underutilized biomass into a valuable agricultural input with promising results.
