Poinsettia growers urged to start planning Lewis mite strategy

Greenhouse growers of Poinsettia crops are being urged to think ahead about their strategy to manage to Lewis mites as this pest appears to be the ‘new normal’ in production.

In a blog post shared recently by Dr. Sarah Jandricic, the greenhouse floriculture IPM specialist for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA), on ONfloriculture.com, growers are encouraged to get out ahead of the pest as it has proven to be “consistently bad in poinsettia the last few years.”

“Whether you choose the preventive route or the wait-and-see approach, knowing which strategies and chemicals are working is critical,” writes Jandricic.

The post goes on to offer tips and resources for scouting and prevention and insights on what products are working best against Lewis mites and when in the production cycle they should be deployed.
