Earlier this year, the federal government announced an investment of up to $7 million to the biomass cluster under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
Led by BioFuelNet Canada, the research cluster’s goal is to improve technology in the areas of agricultural biomass processing for the production of cleaner bioenergy and other bio-based products.
Biomass is typically created from biological plant or animal waste.
In addition to increasing biomass production and reducing production costs for export markets, the cluster hopes to use biomass heat and energy to extend the greenhouse growing season in Northern Canada.
The cluster will receive an additional $3.1 million in contributions from the industry, totalling $10.1 million. McGill University will be receiving up to $888,061 to develop biological inputs that could enhance biomass crop growth such as switchgrass.
