Canada’s premier attraction for those in the horticultural lawn and garden trade set the pace for the upcoming 2007 season, said Pat Hillmer, conference co-ordinator in a press release. Well over 750 exhibitors displayed unique, trendy and must-have products and ideas for this year’s lawns and gardens.

Held at the Toronto Congress Centre from Jan. 9 to 11, Congress 2007 hosted 12,484 green trade professionals who inspected 8 acres of exhibitors to see the latest in technology and new products that ranged from nursery stock to outdoor power equipment, garden tools, greenhouse supplies, irrigation products and other landscaping accessories and services.

“Congress is where our industry meets and learns so that consumers can have access to the latest and most innovative products and services available from around the world,” said Paul Day, trade show manager for Landscape Ontario. “We really work year-round to make sure we find and feature the most current and leading edge products for our industry.” As one of the 50 top fastest growing shows in North America, it is truly an international attraction and is rated as one of the top 5 horticultural shows in North America.

The concurrent Congress Conference offered over 40 sessions with strong business and design and      landscaping themes. “Attendance at these (sessions) increased by 30 per cent to over 1,300 people. People in the landscaping trades are counting on education to give them an edge on their competition and boost productivity,” said Hillmer.

Best booth awards went to Volarock, Freeman Herbs Inc., Permacon Group Inc., Kubota Canada Ltd. and Pro Power Canada Inc. The best-of-show winner was Unilock Ltd., while Zander Sod Co. Ltd. received the best promotion award.

The Awards of Excellence program took place January 9. Major awards went to the following: Kent Ford Design Inc. won the Dunington-Grubb Award for the top landscape construction entry; Cavan’s Landscape Design/Build took the Grounds Management Award for the best maintenance submission; and the Casey van Maris Award, for unique and innovative design in landscaping, was presented to Stonetech Corporation.

Congress has been bringing the horticultural industry together for over 30 years, says Hillmer. The trade show and conference is produced by Landscape Ontario which consists of more than 2,200 members covering nine commodity groups that include growers, garden centres, grounds management, interior-scapers, landscape contractors, snow and ice management, designers, lawn care and irrigation.
