November 19, 2012  By Canadian Garden Centre & Nursery

ph11173Nov. 19, 2012 – W. Atlee Burpee is launching a lineup of breakthrough vegetables, flowers, and fruits for the 2013 gardening season.

Founded in 1876, Burpee has introduced numerous breakthrough varieties in its 136 years, including the first white sweet corn, the “Big Boy” tomato, the first white marigold, iceberg lettuce and “Sweet Seedless,” the world's first seedless tomato.

George Ball, Burpee’s chairman and CEO, says these outstanding new varieties will make 2013 "a blockbuster summer in the garden."

Burpee's new lineup includes:

“On Deck” Hybrid Sweet Corn: The first-ever sweet corn specially bred for containers makes growing corn easy, convenient and fun. Burpee’s exclusive breakthrough bicolour variety is sized at four to five feet tall and perfect for full-sun decks and patios. This variety produces two to three ears per stalk, ranging in size from seven to eight inch long cobs. "On Deck" will transform the look of a patio and put sweet, delicious corn at arm's reach.

“SuperSauce” Hybrid Paste Tomato: Tipping the scales at two pounds, a whopping 5.5 inches tall and five inches wide, SuperSauce produces gallons of luscious, seedless sauce from a single plant harvest — one tomato fills an entire sauce jar. The easy-to-grow, semi-determinate, disease-free plants are exclusive to Burpee and yield a summer-long supply of exquisitely-flavored marinara, tomato gravy or meat sauce.

“Crimson Giant” Raspberry:
"Crimson Giant' weighs 4.5 grams. Each plant produces hefty yields of delicious, firm, bright-red, sugar-sweet berries, just as it was bred to do by the berry experts at Cornell University. Season-extending, self-pollinating plants keep producing beauteous big berries from late September right into October, and even November.

“Mighty Sweet” Hybrid Grape Tomato: Meet the first-ever determinate grape tomato. The super sweet mini two ounce fruits are loaded with antioxidants and are high in flavanoids, beta-carotene, lycopene and other phytonutrients. The “Mighty Sweet” is exclusive to Burpee.

“Sun King” Hybrid Broccoli: This large blue-green variety is a standout for heat tolerance. With heads six to eight inches in diameter, Burpee’s exclusive “Sun King” offers great leaf cover and abundant side shoots.

“Candy Apple” Hybrid Sweet Pepper:
The name “Candy Apple” captures this five inch pepper's luscious deep red colour and sugary sweetness. Large, early-maturing fruits from this Burpee exclusive excel in salads, as snacks, and when roasted, baked or sauteed.

“Blue Lagoon” Verbascum: Introducing the world's very first true-blue verbascum with the very finest blue of any garden flower. A prize winner in the 2011 Chelsea Flower Show, the plant's tall, erect stems are festooned with ever-so-blue saucer-shaped flowers and rosettes of clean green leaves.
