July 22, 2011, Alberta — Green Hectares is continuing its mandate of creating innovative solutions for rural Alberta.

Earlier this month, the Rural Alberta Development Fund and the Province of Alberta confirmed funding of $2.9 million dollars for the development of progressive new programs and distribution models for channelling ideas, resources and programs as well as linking organizations and people from all sectors of agriculture and rural Alberta.

The new Green Hectares programs will emphasize networks already in existence, combining them with ways to engage not previously seen in agriculture or rural development.

Already, the next phase of the Rural Road Show has gathered many partners to develop rural Alberta into a positive example of great lifestyles worldwide. “Learning from and with each of our partners in the first phase of the Rural Road Show has been key to our success,” says executive director Wendy Schneider. “We wanted to bring that into the next phase as a central goal and so we developed a program that centres on this concept.”

In late 2008, Green Hectares finished a strong business case that highlighted the need for rural and agricultural communities to develop opportunities to connect, collaborate and learn. It became apparent through the course of the research that there are many effective rural resources and programs already in existence but highly underutilized.

Green Hectares was founded by young people with a passion for agriculture. Their desire was to have hope to return to the rural life and business. The mandate of Green Hectares is to support the rural way of life in the areas of education, business and culture.
