Garden supply sales start the year strong

March 24, 2014  By Canadian Garden Centre & Nursery

Mar. 24, 2014, Ottawa — Retail sales rose 1.3 per cent to $40.7 billion in January, partially offsetting the decline posted last December.

According to Statistics Canada, seven of 11 retail sub-sectors reported gains, and six of these sub-sectors bounced back from losses they experienced in December.

Among garden equipment and supply dealers, sales rose seven per cent, just about offsetting the decline in December, which Statistics Canada attributed to brutal winter weather across the country.

Looking across the country, retail sales rose in nine provinces in January, after falling in every province the previous month.

Retail sales in Quebec edged down 0.1 per cent in January, largely as a result of lower sales at new car dealers, and, to a lesser extent, pharmacies and drug stores.
