One standout colour that was prevalent throughout the trade floor was a deep teal. The hue was used in booth displays, on the trend guidebooks and on various structures throughout the building. Each year, Christmasworld commissions style agency bora.herke to define the decorating trends for the coming year in a presentation held at the event. The agency combs the show for products that fall into this category and creates four trend groupings. These findings are revealed during daily trend presentations conducted by bora.herke designer Annette Palmisano. Here’s what the agency is predicting for the 2011/2012 season:
Colours that fall under this trend theme are young, feminine and poetic – think fresh yellow, pale blue and light salmon. Delightful Garden contains influences from the ’60s and Palmisano describes this mixture of textures and patterns as “perky combos that are cute and unusual.” She adds that the “nostalgic setting lives through the theme’s fresh colours.” Embroidered materials are combined with contemporary esthetics to create a cheerful contrast. Prints like checks and stripes, prints, animals and floral motifs create a lighthearted charm.
Colours like saffron yellow, a cool, slate grey and rose pink define this grouping. The style features clear shapes and expressive textures along with “unusual accents that give this theme a pure twist,” says Palmisano. The design type used in Gentle Horizon is restrained, orderly and simple, and as a result, a few everyday objects like flowers become the main focus. There’s tension in textures that are soft, like velour, linens, flannel and tweed, and materials that are hard, like glass, lead crystal, stainless steel and polished wood.
The atmosphere of this theme is massive, violent and rough and it is inspired by the forces of nature. Natural influences like rocks, mosses and erosion dictate the colours in this theme, which include forest green, navy blue, caramel brown and sandy beige. The design style is unfinished, aged or corroded, and objects look as if they might dissolve. Palmisano says rusty looks are combined with metallic high-gloss finishes to create a powerful, yet, raw imagery. In addition to natural materials, Elemental Forest includes coarse knits and woven and braided materials.
This theme is defined by things that are lush, exuberant, generous, vivid and extravagant. The colours include a bright, warm orange, mustard yellow, deep turquoise blue and chocolate brown. Bountiful Scenery is a combination of cultures and materials that are lavish – but there is contrast. Luxury materials are placed next to inexpensive or used materials to create unexpected combinations. Materials like pearls, gems and precious stones are combined with patterns like ikat and lamé.
