Sept. 6, 2013, Downers Grove, IL — The winners of the 2013 American Garden Award have been crowned.

Syngenta Flowers' Verbena "Lanai Candy Cane" took the top prize in this year's awards. This striking striped beauty offers continuous summer blooms stacked atop a well-balanced plant habit and a unique flower pattern that commands curbside attention. Candy Cane also offers superior weather tolerance.

The second place winner, the Zinnia "Zahara Cherry" by PanAmerican Seed, offers fast-growing zinnias that bloom continuously all season long and are both disease and drought tolerant.

In third place, the Impatiens "SunPatiens Compact Electric Orange" by Sakata Ornamentals is a new colour in the SunPatiens line. These plants fill in quickly providing three seasons of colour in the garden and in containers. They can be planted in sun or shade and grow readily in rain or shine.

Now in its fifth year, the American Garden Award featured four new flower varieties chosen by their breeders for their excellent garden performance. Once these varieties were planted and put on display at 31 participating gardens across Quebec and the United States, the public was invited to vote for their favourite using one of several voting methods.

Breeders, brokers, distributors and retailers are encouraged to use the AGA logo when promoting all American Garden Awards winners.
