Windsor-Essex farms asked to suspend foreign worker arrivals

January 13, 2022  By Greenhouse Canada

Operators in Windsor-Essex County, Ont. have been asked to cancel, suspend or postpone the arrival of temporary foreign workers.

In a letter issued Jan. 11, the region’s public health unit released these instructions, effective between Jan 13 to Feb 1, 2022.  The health unit says they are “currently experiencing a significant number of outbreaks at agricultural enterprises within the health unit.”

“The community does not have sufficient resources to manage the required self-isolation programs; …the healthcare system overall, and local healthcare system, have limited capacity to manage the surge occurring with the introduction of the Omicron variant.”

Meanwhile, the federal government is allowing the entry of unvaccinated or partially vaccinated agricultural temporary foreign workers into Canada. Testing and quarantine measures remain in place.
