Danziger, Benary, Hilverdaflorist, and three other stops bow out of CAST 2020

March 12, 2020  By Greenhouse Canada

In the latest string of cancellations from several flower breeders due to the new coronavirus, Danziger, Hilverdaflorist, Benary and two other stops have announced their decision to withdraw from this year’s California Spring Trials. This includes Windmill Nursery (Kientzler, J. Berry Nursery, Pelemix Coir, Oasis Grower Solutions, Dramm Corporation) and Suncrest Nursery (Cohen Nurseries, Hishtil Nurseries, Jaldety Nursery, Kamel Plastic Pots and Nir Nurseries).

HilverdaFlorist was scheduled for American Takii’s stop, where there will be still a limited display of their new introductions.

“Due to the combination of the travel ban for European Schengen residents and the impending risk of the COVID-19 virus for our customers and team, we regret to inform you that HilverdaFlorist is forced to cancel their participation for the California Spring Trials,” says the release from Hilverdaflorist. “This situation makes it impossible for the Dutch team to travel to the USA and create the presentation that otherwise would be filled with introductions and other great displays. We have to take our responsibility for our customers and colleagues.” The breeder will be participating in the FlowerTrials, running in week 24 from June 9-12 in the Netherlands.

“This decision was made with heavy heart but necessary for public and personal safety for all of our visitors and exhibitors/host,” says Susan Liou of Suncrest Nursery, noting that Cohen, Hishtil and Jaldety nurseries will still be exhibiting at MNP Flowers in Aalsmeer.

Other breeders taking part in CAST have declared that they will be open or are continuing to monitor the situation before they make a decision. Here is the current list of known open/closed stops:

Ball’s Santa Paula stop will be open March 28-31. Management is monitoring the situation. Guests not travelling to Santa Paula can access all new introductions by downloading the free app: https://www.ballhort.com/springtrials/CASTmobile/

Dümmen Orange’s stop is still on and they are looking forward to hosting growers. Note that their location has changed this year to a spot west of their previous location, along the coast of Avila Beach. Access to the site is by invitation only.

Green Fuse plans to be open. Final decisions will be expected by the end of the week.
