A new gardening season will soon get underway, driving green thumbs into your garden centre in search of the latest must-have plants. To help you get ready for the rush, we’ve prepared this round up of new introductions for the 2014 gardening season.

1. Calibrachoa ‘MiniFamous Double’
Breeder: Selecta
Height: 10 to 15 inches
Spread: 10 to 15 inches
‘MiniFamous Double’ is available in red, white, blue and pink vein.

2. Calibrachoa Superbells ‘Pomegranate Punch’
Breeder: Proven Winners
Height: 6 to 10 inches
Spread: 12 to 24 inches
Brilliant red petals with a dark centre and a tiny hint of a yellow eye make this calibrachoa variety stand out. The blooms on this variety keep coming all summer long. ‘Pomegranate Punch’ performs best in full sun.

3. Coleus Red Fox ‘Mainstreet Wallstreet’

Height: 18 to 24 inches
Spread: N/A
This non-flowering coleus offers excellent branching, medium vigour and is shade tolerant. Wallstreet’s orange foliage makes for a good combination partner.

The ‘Dalaya’ series of dahlia offers exotic bicolours with spring-to-fall performance. This variety is a repeat bloomer and resists mildew for a healthy look from bench to garden. It also works well in containers.

Spread: 18 to 22 inches
‘Blackberry Ice’ offers vigorous growth and, as an H. villosa hybrid, the plant is heat and humidity tolerant. The plant forms a full, rounded clump of foliage that stays all season long. The newest leaves are an iridescent purple with black veining and have amethyst purple undersides. As the leaves mature, they develop a softly luminescent pewter overlay. In midsummer, reddish purple scapes carry wands of cream flowers. Vernalization is not required for flower production.

This new lilac offers incredible fragrance. Its dwarf habit is wider than it is tall, creating a unique mound of soft pink blooms that open from dark pink buds. This deer resistant shrub is lovely in the landscape and as a cut flower.

This flowering vine with trumpet flowers trails up to two feet. It is more compact than classic Lofos and covered with more flowers. This variety is available in Compact Rose and Compact White. The vines are grower friendly, easy to handle and early to bloom.

‘Red Emperor’ is the latest addition to the Sun Parasol Giant group. Plants offer strong garden performance and disease resistance, and very large, striking red flowers.

Height: 10 to 16 inches
Spread: 20 to 30 inches
The ‘Flash Mob’ line of vegetative trailing petunia now includes Bluerific and Redtastic. These morn-type petunias work as container or garden fillers.

Spread: 16 to 20 inches 
‘Cha-Ching Cherry’s’ bicolour striping of rich wines, pinks and creams offers a modern flower array for today’s decorative-minded gardener. This variety works well in hanging baskets and shows equally well in mixed containers.

The bold black and pink star flower adds an innovative colour combination to a planting. Like other Sweetunias, ‘Johnny Flame’ performs well in the landscape, as well as in baskets, containers or combinations. This variety is semi-mounding and early flowering.

Height: 5 to 7 inches
Spread: up to 8 feet
Surfinia ‘Heavenly Blue’ is an upgrade to the classic ‘Sky Blue.’ This variety is vigorous and fast growing and has a mounding habit, covered in light blue flowers.

13. Petunia Supertunia ‘Flamingo’

Height: 8 to 16 inches
Spread: 24 to 36 inches
The ‘Flamingo’ Supertunia has sugary pink blooms in addition to strong heat tolerance and disease resistance. This variety is very vigorous with a flat landscape habit and a spread up to 24 inches in full sun. Supertunia ‘Flamingo’ grows well in its own patio container, or in combination with other varieties.


14-Verbena-EnduroPurple  

14. Verbena ‘Enduro’

Height: 8 to 12 inches
Spread: 18 to 24 inches
The new ‘Enduro’ series of verbena won’t flush out of flower in the heat and survives into the low-teen temperatures. This vigorous landscape verbena will be available in purple and white blush.

15. Verbena ‘Lanai Twister’

Height: 10 to 12 inches
Spread: 18 to 24 inches
‘Lanai Twister’ Red and ‘Twister’ Purple feature large flowers that bloom continuously throughout the season
and are ideal for hanging baskets and mixed or monoculture containers. Unique flower patterns make these plants stand out.


16-Superbena-Royale-Plum

‘Royale Plum Wine’

Height: 8 to 12 inches
Spread: 12 to 24 inches
This new Superbena features reddish-purple blooms and is early to bloom in week nine. Disease resistance means the colour continues throughout the season.

Height: 4 to 10 inches
Spread: up to 48 inches
Candy Stripe is a striking bicoloured variety in the ‘Temari’ verbena series. The petals have a striped pattern of hot strawberry red and pale pink. Plants have an upright then trailing habit and the same heat tolerance and disease resistance as other varieties in the Temari series.

An abundance of salmon coloured double flowers cover compact plants from late spring through fall. Dramatic double blooms offer a unique salmon colour and bright foliage covers spent blossoms, lending the plant a fresher appearance without the need to deadhead.

‘Double Hot Cherry’ offers vivid deep rose coloured double flowers. This variety is a continuous bloomer that covers well-mounded plants from late spring through fall. The plant covers spent blossoms, giving it a fresher appearance without deadheading. In addition, the flower petals do not fade under high temperatures.


20-Zinnia-ZaharaSunburst  

20. Zinnia ‘Zahara Starburst’
Breeder: PanAmerican Seed
Height: 12 to 18 inches
Spread: 12 to 18 inches
‘Sunburst’ is the first gold and red bicolour of its kind, offering 20 per cent larger flowers and more colour.  Like other varieties in the ‘Zahara’ line, it is disease resistant.
