damaged, cars were dented and people ran for cover when a short but intense
storm packing golf ball-size hail slammed into Calgary.

Environment Canada says Monday’s
storm moved so quickly that there was not enough time to issue a warning before
it struck the city from the west.

The hail smashed glass panes on
rooftop greenhouses at the University of Calgary, causing about $100,000
damage.

Vehicles in many areas were
pummelled by the big icy stones, leaving insurance agents scrambling to answer
inquiries about damage claims.

The severe weather also forced
Calgary Stampede officials to halt midway rides and pull rodeo animals under
cover, while visitors scrambled to find any shelter they could find.

Tornado warnings were issued for an area east of Calgary but there were
no reports of any twisters.
