Touring the California Spring Trials (Part 2)

April 13, 2016  By Brad McMillan JVK

April 13, 2016 – This is my second set of California Spring Trials varieties that have caught my eye so far this week. There are a number of amazing new introductions this year.

• Greenfuse Botanicals has added a new colour pattern to the top-selling Blanket Series of spreading petunias. ‘Purple Star’ was our team’s favourite, hands down. Its deep-purple colour with white star pattern really catches the eye. Being a Blanket, this is a vigorous grower that really trails heavily or spreads.

• PanAm Seed has come up with a completely new form of celosia that has a striking, dramatic look – appropriately named Dracula. A single, deep-red giant flow‎er sits atop dark green and red foliage. It grows to 8-16″ in height and has an 8-12″ in spread, possibly somewhat smaller in extended high-light environments.

‎• Westhoff has added a unique, striking new Frisky Purple to the already large Crazytunia Collection of petunias. This is another upright, mounding variety, and is new for 2017.
