Succession planning: it’s never too early to start

Aug. 25, 2016 – Greenhouse horticulture is well known for multi-generational farm operations, with often two generations – and sometimes three – working side-by-side.



Succession planning is essential to a smooth transition when retirements roll around. We’re hosting a free webinar on Sept. 15 with solid advice on how best to prepare. The webinar will run from 2 to 3 p.m. Eastern time. Leading the session is Terry Betker, president and CEO of Backswath Management Inc.

“I get asked all the time about how to start the process. Understanding that succession planning is really about transitioning ownership and management – and importantly, separating those discussions – is a great first step.

“For the webinar presentation, I’ll be using my experiences working with farm families to drill down into what you should know to help make this happen.”


Betker is recognized for his visionary and leading-edge contribution to farm management. He is the Canadian representative to the International Farm Management Association, and is also a founding member of Familybusiness.ag.

He is a past president of the Canadian Consulting Agrologists Association, a past founding national director of the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors, and a past director of the Canadian Farm Business Management Council.



Betker was appointed to a committee by the federal agriculture minister to review Business Risk Management program development and implementation.
