Steady attendance at Vineland points trials

December 5, 2014  By Dave Harrison

Dec. 5, 2014, Vineland Station, Ont. — About 125 poinsettia varieties, including 30 new introductions, are being showcased this week at open houses at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre.

Dozens of growers attended an industry open house yesterday. A public open house is being held today for consumers.

Vineland is one of three trial sites in North America supported by poinsettia breeders to evaluate performance of the plants. Vineland represents the northern region; North Carolina State University represents the mid-latitude region; and the University of Florida represents the southern region.

Participating breeders include Dummen USA, Paul Ecke Ranch, Beekenkamp Plants, Ball/Selecta First Class, and Syngenta Flowers.

The open house also features a reduced molybdenum study, sponsored by Flowers Canada Ontario, and a Swirskii/Nutrimite trial for silver leaf whitefly sponsored by Biobest.
