Sept. 8, 2010, Quebec City – Quebec Premier Jean Charest is paying tribute to one of his cabinet ministers who has died at age 41.
The premier says there will be a state funeral for Claude Bechard, who died of cancer on
Tuesday. The details are still being worked out with Bechard’s family.
The longtime minister held a variety of roles and continued in the intergovernmental affairs and agriculture portfolios until shortly before he died. Charest says he opposed his minister’s decision to keep working and that he offered to relieve Bechard of his duties so he could focus on getting better. But he says Bechard refused and wanted to keep working until the end.
Charest says he’s touched by all the kind wishes he’s heard from Quebecers.
