Celebrating 40 years at its Unionville, Ont. location, Sheridan Nurseries has completed a major renovation at the Highway 7 site including 13,000 square feet of new indoor retail space and expanding to eight acres of outdoor plant displays.

“The renovation includes an expanded custom design department, a new patio and outdoor living showroom and a new seminar area,” Karl Stensson, senior vice president told media and guests at the store’s grand reopening.

Expanded services include custom container design and free repotting; landscape design including sketches, detailed plans and contractor information; a garden pharmacy with pest identification and solutions; cottage delivery for outdoor furniture and plants; a gift and bridal registry; plus gardening and design seminars.

The store’s 10,000-square-foot greenhouse has more than 200 varieties of indoor plants, complete with a fully landscaped indoor waterfall.

“While it is true that Sheridan Nurseries is in the green, as in gardening business, we also continue to promote the green, as in earth-friendly ways,” Stensson said. “We want to live and work in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way. Our environmental plan will see more changes in the way we do things in our offices, at the farms and at the garden centres.”

He noted that Sheridan is promoting the use of natural products, has established a pot return policy and at the local level was one of the first businesses to participate in the Markham blue box program.

sheridan3Markham mayor Frank Scarpitti, on hand to cut the ribbon, described the revamped store as “part of the local landscape,” noting that it contributes to the community in many ways, including the employment of 100 people and participation in the annual Santa Claus Parade with an “outstanding float.”

The Unionville store is one of nine Sheridan Nurseries locations in the Greater Toronto Location. Open year round, seven days a week, it has a 150-car parking lot. Sheridan Nurseries was founded in 1913.
