The NAFWA scholarship is named for Karl Schroff, a customs broker who for more than 50 years helped numerous flower bulb companies get their products into North America. Schroff died at the age of 81 in 2003.

“NAFWA is proud to offer this scholarship to honor the legacy of Karl Schroff, an incredible person who was always looking out for others and cared deeply about the success and longevity of the flower bulb industry,” said Jack DeVroomen, NAFWA board member and owner of a Dig.Drop.Done Foundation member company.

Many people involved in the bulb trade have fond memories of Schroff. His helpfulness, personality and business sense won the heart of all who met him.

Schroff was knowledgeable about the flower bulb business and made frequent trips to Holland to visit customers and educate them about the import process. The company he built – Karl Schroff and Associates – was later acquired by Western Overseas, Inc. Western Overseas and the Schroff family have donated the funds for the Karl Schroff Scholarship.
