SAIT’s greenhouse growing a new generation of chefs

Culinary students at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology are getting a lesson in what fresh fruits, veggies and herbs look like before they make it into the kitchen, courtesy of a tiny high-tech greenhouse.

In total, 185 different varieties are grown in the school’s Jackson Henuset Memorial Culinary Garden, an classroom and demonstration site. Plants are grown in soil warmed by solar and waste biodiesel heated water.



The Calgary Herald reports:


“The temperature of each bed is carefully controlled, and new ‘bubble’ technology provides R30 insulation to keep the greenhouse warm in winter and cool in summer.”
