
June 25, 2013, Ottawa — Lower receipts at garden centre check outs across the country offset gains the industry posted in February and March, according to new data from Statistics Canada.
Sales at building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers dropped one percent in April, Statistics Canada reported. Sales in the sub sector have been relatively flat since the middle of 2012.
Overall retail sales edged up 0.1 per cent to $39.5 in April, with six of the 11 subsectors Statistics Canada tracks reported sales increases. The largest increases were found in the motor vehicle and parts dealers (up 1.4 per cent) and general merchandise stores (up 0.7 per cent).
