Québec changes ornamental horticulture to ‘essential’

March 31, 2020
By Greta Chiu

Québec has placed ornamental horticulture back on the essential services list.

Last week, the province moved to shut down non-essential services including ornamental horticulture, only allowing minimal plant maintenance that would comply with public health regulations.

Today, Québec Vert, formerly FIHOQ, announced that Le ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation de Québec (MAPAQ) has changed their ruling and declared ornamental horticulture essential.

Québec Vert says this resulted from talks in collaboration with representative commodity groups, including Les Producteurs en serres du Québec and l’Association québécoise des producteurs en pépinière.

There are approximately 80 to 90 ha of ornamental greenhouse in Québec. Vegetable production and any services related to food cultivation were not impacted.

Ya it s not great. Greenhouse that produce cannot sell directly to the public at their premises. Unfortunately they want us to sell our product on line or by phone or two Costco or Walmart. The governments are being hypocritical when they think we can do this. It s too late. Plus those big guys have already purchased their plants for the year. Buy locally is their big slogan now on the radio. Ok sure. !!!! They are the ones that created and allowed big business to shut down hundreds of growers and nurseries already. They are letting these big box stores be the new norm with this crisis allowing thousands of clients to line up everyday jeopardizing more lives.! A small greenhouse operation with mostly outdoor displays in the spring is a lot less harmful with the Covid breakout than these big stores. We ll all be bankrupt if this is to continue after May 1. Meanwhile Walmart and Costco have been selling everything a garden center can sell right now. The government are too scared to tell the big stores to shut because they would be tied up in courts for years. Walmart’s sales in 2019 were 500 billion dollars. Do you think they need the money?
