Québec changes ornamental horticulture to ‘essential’

March 31, 2020  By Greta Chiu

Québec has placed ornamental horticulture back on the essential services list.

Last week, the province moved to shut down non-essential services including ornamental horticulture, only allowing minimal plant maintenance that would comply with public health regulations.

Today, Québec Vert, formerly FIHOQ, announced that Le ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation de Québec (MAPAQ) has changed their ruling and declared ornamental horticulture essential.

Québec Vert says this resulted from talks in collaboration with representative commodity groups, including Les Producteurs en serres du Québec and l’Association québécoise des producteurs en pépinière.

There are approximately 80 to 90 ha of ornamental greenhouse in Québec. Vegetable production and any services related to food cultivation were not impacted.
