Ontario greenhouse floriculture specialists Dr. Sarah Jandricic and Dr. Chevonne Dayboll have released a monthly poinsettia scouting guide, highlighting particular pests and problems to look for.

For July, keep an eye out for cutting rots, including bacterial rot Erwinia which is one of the first diseases to appear in poinsettia, as is Rhizoctonia.

Whitefly scouting should start in August to determine future pest management decisions. Look out for Lewis mites which come in on cuttings, as they are impossible to notice at low densities in June/July. Common deficiencies are more likely to appear in mid-fall, but to head them off, it’s important to keep track of E.C. and pH levels starting in August.
