Nov. 17, 2014, Charlottetown — One of the investors hoping to open a medical marijuana production facility in Charlottetown says the process is taking longer than expected.
Edwin Jewell says Health Canada hasn’t issued any new licences for similar facilities in more than six months.
Jewell, owner of Jewell’s Country Market in York, is one of 10 investors in the proposed operation. It was the group’s hope to be up and running by this fall.
Last winter, Charlottetown city council voted in favour of changing its zoning and development bylaw to include the definition of medical marijuana production facilities.
The city also issued a building permit, giving Jewell’s group the green light to start construction. But Jewell says the group won’t proceed until it hears from Health Canada.
The new facility would operate under the name Canada’s Island Garden and employ about 15 people to start. It would be housed in the P.E.I. BioCommons.
