Ontario greenhouse operator expands for winter production of tomatoes and strawberries

March 18, 2021  By DelFrescoPure

DelFrescoPure has announced a twenty-five acre expansion to its greenhouse production space. This will be phase one of three.

The expansion is expected to be in full production by September 2021 in order to fulfill marketplace demands for Ontario greenhouse grown tomatoes and strawberries for 2021-2022 winter production.

“With the demand for locally grown Ontario greenhouse tomatoes, DelFrescoPure decided to leverage the demand with expansion plans. We’re planning three phases to keep up with consumer demand for tomatoes and strawberries.” said Carl Mastronardi, president of Del Fresco Produce Ltd.

The expansion features innovative technology for growing in all seasons including energy curtains and grow lights to provide over three quarters of a half million square-foot controlled micro climate environment for growing tomatoes.

“We are proud to offer our retail partners and consumers high quality locally grown greenhouse tomatoes from September 2021 winter production season.” commented Ray Mastronardi, vice president of sales. “The decision to expand the winter tomato program was made clear from our retail partners asking for more acreage to meet the demand of the consumers.”

With increased consumption of locally grown tomatoes, DelFrescoPure’s expansion is said to offer “a flavourful, high quality produce experience to consumers” with reduced food miles to supply Canadian and U.S. marketplaces.

Details on phase two and phase three expansions have not yet been released.
