July 30, 2013, Toronto — Online shopping will represent eight per cent of overall retail spending in Canada by 2018, according to a new report by Forrester Research.
Online sales grew from $15.3 billion in 2010 to $20.6 billion in 2013, and are projected to reach $33.8 billion by 2018.
The average amount Canadians spend online each year is also set to increase over this period. Forrester forecasted that online spending in this country will rise from $1,130 this year to $1,552 by 2018.
According to Forrester's data, most of the growth in online spending will be driven by broader access to products and services that are only available at brick-and-mortar stores or via cross-border delivery from American retailers.
