OGVG awards top marks for greenhouse veggie dishes

Nov. 11, 2014, Leamington, Ont. — Glenda Neatt of Durham College is this year’s OGVG Cultivating Culinary competition winner.

The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers sponsored the event held at Cirillo’s Culinary Academy in Toronto.

In the first round of eliminations, four semi-finalists were selected based on their recipe submission that highlighted delicious Ontario greenhouse vegetables.

Judges included:

• Chef Christine Cushing of “Fearless in the Kitchen.”

• Chef Matt Basile of “Rebel Without a Kitchen.”

• Chief executive officer Burkhard Mausberg of the Friends of the Greenbelt Fund.

• Editorial director Leslie Wu of Ontario Restaurant News.

Neatt wowed the judges with her “Gazpacho Martini Sorbet,” presented with a roasted red pepper tuile and tomato chip.

She received a cash prize of $500 from OGVG and appliances provided by KitchenAid Canada, and she appeared on the CHCH morning show with chef Wendy Barrett to present her winning recipe.

OGVG approached seven community colleges in Ontario and reached over 250 future culinary chefs through in-class activities and hands-on workshops. Participating students submitted recipes that highlighted Ontario greenhouse vegetables, was easy to prepare, creative, and of course, tasty!

Funding was also provided by the Greenbelt Fund to support the launch of the OGVG Cultivating Culinary Students Program.
