June 10, Leamington, Ont. – The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) organization is working with producers affected by last Sunday's tornado to assess the total damage, although preliminary estimates
show that a small amount of acreage was completely destroyed
and a number of other greenhouses were damaged.

One early assessment found 16 acres of greenhouse vegetable facilities on five farms
were completely destroyed in the storm, with significant vent damage to
many others.

Provincially, OGVG represents over 1,820 acres of greenhouses.

OGVG will be working with government officials "to help facilitate affected producer needs" and will provide support to them during this time.

“We are keeping our members in our thoughts during this difficult time and will be working with those affected to ensure a smooth rebuilding process,” said general manager George Gilvesy.

“There is some damage to the affected greenhouses but our growers are resilient and have been working through the damages. We are just very thankful there were no injuries.”
