Oct. 25, 2016 – Greenhouse vegetable production has been growing at an impressive rate the past few years, according to the U.S. Census of Agriculture.
The number of operations has grown from 1015 in 1998 (sales of US $223 million), to 1476 in 2009 ($553 million), and to 2521 in 2014 ($797 million).
Tomatoes are the most popular crop, with 978 acres (396 hectares) and total sales of $401 million.
“Herbs” was the second largest crop, with 318 acres (129 ha) and $71 million in sales. Others major crops included:
• Cucumber – 252 acres (102 ha) and $78 million.
• Lettuce – 99 acres (40 ha) and $56 million.
• Pepper – 81 acres (33 ha) and $6 million.
• Strawberry – 14 acres (six hectares) and $1 million.
In addition, there were 399 acres (162 ha) of “other crops,” which include spinach, squash, onion, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, eggplants, etc., with a total value of $184 million.
