July 31, 2015, Whitehorse – The federal government is continuing to invest in year-round food production research in the far north.
Yukon MP Ryan Leef, speaking on behalf of Minister Leona Aglukkaq (Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, Minister for the Arctic Council), announced an investment to support northern communities to become more self-sufficient and sustainable while improving the availability of locally grown food in Yukon.
This investment will see experts hired to conduct research on greenhouses in the following Yukon communities: Dawson City, Faro, Ross River and Carcross.
This research will result in feasibility studies, business plans, and market analysis that will determine the likelihood of success for potential greenhouses in these communities.
• CanNor is investing $180,015 in feasibility studies and technical support in these projects. Business, community and government partners invested an additional $41,934, bringing the total investment in these greenhouse initiatives to $221,949.
• In August 2014, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced up to $2 million for the Northern Greenhouse initiative, which supports northern communities and business to develop food-producing greenhouses.
“Our government has worked closely with Northern communities, research centres, and growers to improve self-sustaining and food secure regions in the North,” said Leef.
“These investments support a significant suite of programs designed to bring fresh and nutritious food to our communities.”
