Sept. 30, 2016, Niagara Falls, Ont. – The industry’s focus will be on Niagara Falls on Oct. 5-6 as the Canadian Greenhouse Conference moves into the Scotiabank Convention Centre.

A pre-conference bus tour is being held Tuesday, visiting leading growers in the Niagara region along with the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre.

CGC’16 has busy schedules on Wednesday and Thursday. Highlights include a soldout trade show and two busy days of educational sessions.

“THE FUTURE OF THE GREENHOUSE INDUSTRY”

This year’s keynote presentation (Wednesday at noon) is certainly an attention-getter: “The Future of the Greenhouse Industry – From Energy Consumer to Energy Supplier.”

Leading the session is Dr. Silke Hemming, head of the greenhouse technology research team at Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands. “The targets for energy saving in Dutch horticulture are high,” Hemming explains.

Her presentation will describe some of the latest research from her group, including energy conservation by greenhouse system design, the new coverings being studied and the use of sensors and decision-support systems.

GARDEN CENTRE RETAILING

Another highlight will be the two-part garden centre presentation by retailing guru John Stanley on Thursday – “Make Sure You Own Your Market.”

Other seminar themes will include lighting, vegetable production, sanitation, humidity control, IPM, bedding plant winners, vertical farming, organic certification, marketing and research updates, to name a few. Check the CGC’16 website for the full program, or review the program in our digital September edition.

The conference is great for networking, including a Wednesday afternoon reception in the Garden Oasis on the trade show floor, and The Gathering banquet later that evening.
