Sept. 13, 2011 – Landscape Ontario will help break ground this week by hosting a tree planting event to recognize Canada’s first National Tree Day.

National Tree Day will serve as a celebration for all Canadians to appreciate the great benefits that trees provide us – clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand and connecting with nature.

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, will plant a native sugar maple tree, donated by the Maple Leaves Forever Foundation, at Parkwood National Historic Site.

“We are delighted the Minister of Finance can join us particularly as we move into an era when we are evaluating the cost benefits of trees and green infrastructure,” says Denis Flanagan, Director of Public Relations, Landscape Ontario.

Tom Intven, President, Landscape Ontario, will join Minister Flaherty, Dr. Richard Marceau, President, The Parkwood Foundation and Ken Jewett, Chairman and Founder, Maple Leaves Forever Foundation. Following the planting, Minister Flaherty will address members of the Board of Landscape Ontario and The Parkwood Foundation at an indoor gathering.

About National Tree Day: The inaugural event will be celebrated nation-wide September 21, 2011. National Tree Day was initiated by MP Royal Galipeau, and passed by the House of Commons March 2, 2011. "The United Nations General Assembly has actually declared 2011 the International Year of Forests," Galipeau said. "Canadians will dedicate trees, plant trees, learn about trees and appreciate the historical impact the tree has had on Canada's economic success as a nation."
