New varieties in spotlight at Sant open house

Sept. 16, 2013, Kleinburg, Ont. — Growers wanting ideas for next year's crop mix came to the right place at the annual George Sant & Sons Greenhouses Open House.

Hundreds of growers from throughout Ontario and Quebec attended the event.

Dozens of new varieties were showcased. Participating breeders included Ball FloraPlant, Selecta, Burpee Home Gardens, Darwin Perennials, Pan Am Seed and Dummen.

Among highlights was the annual Garden Mum trials. Participating breeders included Ball, Syngenta and Grolink.

The open house attracted growers from across Ontario and Quebec.

Daniel McMahon, business manager of hardgoods with Ball, was on hand to demonstrate the Punch 'N Gro Two unit.
The garden mum trials were well attended.

A mixed combo highlighting three colours in Syngenta's Jacqueiine series attracted considerable attention.

The Cool Wave pansy series from Ball continues to impress growers and consumers.
Burpee Home Gardens has introduced its new Flash Mob petunia line of 'Redtastic' and 'Bluerific.'
And for all you Beatles fans ... 'Abbey Road' ... a new coleus from Dummen. It's part of the eight-colour Mainstreet series, which features famous streets.
Jerry Gorchels, technical product representative with PanAmerican Seed, was among specialists meeting with growers.
