Sept. 12, 2013 — Jiffy Products Sri Lanka is vehemently denying a recent report in a Sri Lankan newspaper that said the company is polluting the Sri Lanka environment with waste water from its processing operations.
Nothing could be further from the truth, says Jiffy International AS director of marketing Roelof Drost. The article was based on “total fiction.”
As part of the manufacturing process and RHP requirement, Jiffy Products SL treats coco pith and husks with calcium nitrate, and washes the media after absorption of the required elements.
Jiffy Products SL has been granted the required approvals for the import of calcium nitrate for the purpose of treating coco pith and husk chips in the manufacturing process.
MEETING IRRIGABLE STANDARDS
The drained and filtered effluent from the manufacturing process is diluted with ample fresh water until the mixture reaches the irrigable standards approved by the Sri Lanka Board of Investment, Central Environmental Authority and the Provincial Environmental Authority of the North Western Province.
Jiffy stores the diluted effluent in storage tanks and uses it to irrigate a 300-acre mixed coconut plantation, which is a project in Kobeigane conducted by Jiffy Sri Lanka in association with the Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka.
The system for coir treatment is equipped to handle 300,000 cubic metres of water for washing the substrate and 200,000 cubic metres of effluent.
NUTRIENT APPLICATION FOR COCONUT PLANTATIONS
The Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka has recommended the use of effluents discharged in the manufacturing process as a nutrient for coconut plantations as far back as in 2007.
Jiffy Products SL confirms no effluent is discharged to the open environment or to the Deduru Oya in particular and that effluent produced in its operational processes was treated and used solely for irrigation purposes of the aforesaid hybrid coconut cultivation project.
Jiffy Products SL also strictly conforms to all the conditions of the Environmental Protection Licenses issued to Jiffy, environmental standards prescribed by the Central Environment Authority, Provincial Environmental Authority of the North Western Province, the Board of Investment and the relevant international organizations.

• Occupational Health and Safety Management System – OHSAS 18001:2007.

• RHP quality mark by the European Certification Institute for the Agricultural Sector (ECAS B.V.) certifying JIFFY complies with the certification criteria laid down in the ECAS “regulation for product certification.”
