Hottest, Perfect and Coolest award winners

June 20, 2014, Leamington, Ont. — Greenhouse growers, marketers and suppliers from as far away as British Columbia entered a record number of entries (144) into the competitions celebrating Essex County as being home to the largest greenhouse industry in North America.

These unique competitions, presented in part this year by Red Sun Farms, happen in two stages.
Accepting awards were, back row, left to right, Andrea Quiring (Nature Fresh Farms), Karen Rai (Lakeside Produce), Jody Flaming (Amco Produce), Mark Figueiredo (Mastronardi Produce), Harold Paivarinta (Red Sun Farms), Sid Spano (Mucci International); and front row, Jordan Kniaziew (Orangeline Farms) and Sarah Pau (Pure Hothouse Foods).
The overall best tomato, cucumber and pepper winners also received a discounted greenhouse disinfection donated by Tech Mist.

Red Sun Farms provided Farm Level sponsorship of the event. The net proceeds from this event will be used for REACH's main project in Uganda.

• Best Mini Seedless – Pure Hothouse Foods.

• People’s Choice – Lakeside Produce (‘Sale’ Bite Size Orange).

• Kids’ Choice – Double Diamond Acres (‘Pink Mambo’ Bite Size).

• Best Beefsteak – Mucci International / Mucci Pac (‘Terreno’).

• Best Roma – Mastronardi Produce /SUNSET (‘Romano’).

• Best Cluster – Mucci International / Mucci Pac.

• Best Cocktail – Mucci International / Mucci Pac.

• Best Bite-Size – Del Fresco Produce (‘Orange Bite Size’).

• Best Specialty – Mastronardi Produce /SUNSET (‘Zima’).


The proceeds from last year’s competition raised enough money to sponsor over 50 children in Uganda, Africa. The sponsorships give the children food, school supplies, medicine and everything else they need to get an education and break the cycle of poverty.

REACH is a small charity run entirely by local volunteers. Its unique program guarantees that 100 per cent of child sponsorship dollars goes to help the children. Separate fundraisers, such as this one, raise money for operating expenses.
