March 24, 2017 – Ontario’s greenhouse sector leaders are applauding the province’s latest investment in the sector’s productivity and innovation.

The Greenhouse Competitiveness and Innovation Initiative was announced yesterday by Jeff Leal, Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The announcement was made during a tour of Link Greenhouses in Bowmanville.

• “Our sector appreciates the encouragement to make a significant contribution to the Premier’s agri-food growth challenge while better maintaining and re-enforcing our competitiveness,” said Jan VanderHout, Chairperson for The Ontario Greenhouse Alliance (TOGA).

“This commitment to our sector by the Minister will enable us to make greater progress towards the growth and sustainability goals we share.”

• “Ontario’s greenhouse growers are keen to invest in innovative technologies that will make a positive difference to the economy and the environment,” noted Ian Vermeer, president of Flowers Canada (Ontario), one of TOGA’s two member organizations.

“This investment by Ontario will accelerate their adoption and generate opportunities to develop further ways of improving greenhouse production systems right here in Ontario.”

• “The government of Ontario’s commitment to our sector, as announced by Minister Leal, sends a very important message: Ontario is a great place for greenhouses to expand – this support will better position the Ontario greenhouse sector to continue to grow sustainably,” said George Gilvesy, chair of the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers, one of TOGA’s two member organizations.

“And with the growth of our sector comes good jobs, more exports, significant investment and more productive capacity for greenhouse agriculture.”
