A new age of talent management is upon us. With an aging and shrinking workforce in Canada and across the globe, talent management strategies have changed significantly and are often top of mind. As greenhouse managers look to the future, considering where and how you find your talent will play a significant role in the overall planning process. The following are some ideas to consider when developing your workforce plans.

Focus on your critical talent: With fewer people to choose from in the job market, focusing on getting the right people in the right jobs will help you better understand which investment of time and resources will bring you the most value.

Get the basics right: Identifying, managing, developing and engaging talent should be a part of the business, not apart from the business. Clearly communicating your talent strategies and requirements to all levels in your organization is key to success.

Connect and engage your people: Collaborative environments provide people with a “community” to belong to, as well as provide them with an opportunity to work together and innovate. Depending on the nature and structure of your business, connecting people will take on different forms. Finding the right way for you is vital and will help with overall success.

Respond to your people: Listen to your people and their needs because they are at the heart of your business success. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to managing your talent, so when developing a strategy, one of the best sources of information is the people who work for you every day. They know what they’re looking for and they know you can provide it. Engaging with them is important and can provide an environment where everybody wins.

Source talent creatively: In order to decide what you need, you first need to understand where your current problem areas are. You will need to understand potential hot spots, and where skill gaps and problems may emerge. Sourcing employees in the current market means being smarter about how and where to use talent. It may be important to look within your own greenhouses and see if there are any talented people who are under-utilized. Tapping into every possible source will be essential when competing in an under-resourced talent environment.
