Sept. 18, 2013, St. Catharines, Ont. — Dozens of growers and retailers browsed through one of Canada’s largest garden mum trials this morning at an open house hosted by Schenck Farms and Greenhouses.

The trials have been held for several years. More than 100 varieties were displayed. Participating breeders this year were GroLink and Syngenta.

Helping greet visitors were Terry Talsma and Mark Smith from Syngenta, Bernard Chodyla from GroLink, Rob Fluit from JVK, and Lou Schenck.

Varieties with larger flowers were among the market trends noted, along with increasingly vibrant colours that don't fade.

The turnout was steady all morning.

Impressive "yellows" from Syngenta include those in the Yolanda, Olga and Chelsey lines.
Looking for a variety with large flowers? Here's a 'Padre Orange' flower placed next to an 'Aluga Yellow' bloom, both from GroLink.
Matador (GroLink) is an early, bright yellow variety with a sphere habit. It has great shelf life and excellent colour retention.
'Rosalba White' (GroLink) has mid-size white blooms with a touch of yellow in the centres. It is prolific with a uniform habit and is suitable for large containers.
'Bertha White' of Yoder Mums (Syngenta) is a great choice for early natural-season production. It has slightly semi-double flowers.
