Funding OK'd for new greenhouse in the North
NWT
Aug. 3, 2015, Fort Simpson, NWT – The federal government is supporting the development of a commercial greenhouse that will utilize hydroponic technology to provide locally grown, high quality, affordable produce.

Head of the Line Services Inc. (HOTLS), an Aboriginal business based in Fort Simpson, will receive support through CanNor’s Northern Greenhouse Initiative to undertake the project. The greenhouse will grow produce that will be sold to local, retail, and camp markets as well as providing employment for local people.

This one-year project (2014-15) is valued at $232,000. Ottawa is investing $100,000, while HOTLS is investing $102,000. The Government of the Northwest Territories is providing support in the amount of $30,000.

The objective of the Northern Greenhouse Initiative is to advance productivity and commercialization of food producing greenhouse projects in the North. It is meant to improve access to healthy food and increase jobs and economic opportunities for Northerners.

“This will contribute to healthier, locally grown, and lower priced fresh food for northern families and less reliance on southern producers and distributors,” said MP Leona Aglukkaq. “It will help provide northern solutions for northern challenges.”

Earl Browning, President
of Head of the Line Services Inc. said the greenhouse “will provide healthy, fresh produce for local communities and businesses, create jobs, reduce reliance on southern food imports and help to diversify the local economy.”
