Sept. 30, 2016, Simcoe, Ont. – Thrips are one of the most serious greenhouse pests, with an especially large host range that makes most greenhouse crops vulnerable.
Thrips readily develop resistance to pesticides, to the point where, in some countries, there are few or no effective pesticides available to control them.
However there are a number of tools and resources growers can access.
The third and final presentation in our 2016 free webinar series will examine this pest challenge and control options. It will be held Thursday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. Eastern.
“Tips for Thrips Control: From Propagation to Pocketbook” will be led by Dr. Sarah Jandricic, the floriculture IPM specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).
EXTENSION RESEARCH
A native of southern Ontario, she has conducted research in greenhouse floriculture crops since 2003. She got her start in greenhouse pest management during her master’s degree studies at the University of Guelph.
There, she tested the compatibility of the beneficial beetle Atheta coriaria with nematodes and soil-applied pesticides for fungus gnat control. Her research was partly funded by Flowers Canada (Ontario), and she served an internship there in 2004.
After her degree, she spent two years working for the Niagara-based pest management consulting company Eco Habitat Agri Services, collaborating with growers on research projects such as trap plants for Western flower thrips.
Jandricic obtained her PhD from Cornell University in 2013, and has been working with OMAFRA since January 2015. She is a contributor to the popular ONfloriculture blog of OMAFRA, which posts timely crop management updates.
