FCC funds community greenhouse initiatives

Through its FCC AgriSpirit fund, Farm Credit Canada is giving $1.5 million to 84 rural community projects across Canada.

“The FCC AgriSpirit Fund is about helping community-minded individuals and groups undertake projects that enhance the quality of life in rural Canada,” said Sophie Perreault, FCC executive vice-president and chief operating officer.

The fund awards $5,000 to $25,000 to projects that enrich the lives of residents or foster sustainability in communities. Some funding recipients will aim to improve food accessibility through community greenhouse projects, including:

• New Brunswick Community Gardens, was awarded $20,000 to purchase a greenhouse and increase sustainability at the Hayes Urban Teaching Farm
• L’Exit de Waterloo in Quebec, was awarded $25,000 to construct a greenhouse for growing vegetables and educational purposes
• Focus Forward for Indigenous Youth in Saskatchewan, was awarded $25,000 to purchase and install solar panels and an irrigation system for a community greenhouse on Montreal Lake Cree Nation
