October 1, 2018  By Greenhouse Canada

The public have spoken, and the winner was Superbells Doublette Love Swept by Proven Winners.

Members of the community chose their favourites among a number of varieties on display during August’s flower trials.

At the Colours of the Summer Open House at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, more than 200 vegetative and seed flower cultivars were put through container trials.

Individuals interested in plant garden performance headed over to Landscape Ontario/University of Guelph’s trial garden open house the next day. Starting at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute, the morning programme featured speakers, a turf research tour and a trial garden tour that included an All-America Selections judging trial. Also included was a nod to the edible flower trend, including calendula and nasturtium.

The afternoon was spent in Milton at the Landscape Ontario office where annuals, perennials, roses and shrubs were on display. The day ended with a tour of Sheridan Nurseries a BBQ and other fun festivities in Georgetown.

Superbells Doublette Love Swept was so well-loved that the container mysteriously disappeared from its Guelph location, says trial garden manager Rodger Tschanz. Three garvinea gerberas were tied for second.
